Big Emotions Are My Superpower

A Children's Story for Grown-Ups
8

As I moved through some big emotions over the past two weeks, I caught a few doubts creeping in - Was I overreacting? Being too sensitive? Lazy for being exhausted and distracted?

Nope! I’m allowed to feel what I feel. And so are you. Deciding to celebrate that with a manifesto of sorts, I pulled out my markers and set to work.

The product is a very homemade children’s book. Written and sketched out over the course of 12 hours, it was a full-day project, but just that. I did not want to let perfect be the enemy of good, so I got it all down, well, imperfectly. But I love my little creation. I hope you enjoy it, too.

Let this also be an invitation to sketch out your own thoughts, to risk being a beginner, to spend the day creating something with your hands. Ready? Ok. Read on below.

Big Emotions Are My Superpower
My emotions are big.
When I love something, I love it a whole, whole lot.
When I am sad, I feel it for a long time.
When I am angry, I shake.
Sometimes, it’s hard to find room for my emotions.
I worry that they are in the way, or that someone else won’t like them.
Sometimes, I try to mask them.
But then I remember…
My emotions help me protect myself, make art, and care for a friend.
They help me do hard things.
When I start to doubt, I remind myself…
Big emotions are my superpower.

The end.
